Welcome
First day
In our classroom, a lot of the thinking and learning happens with whiteboards. For now, here's what you need to know:
A. We work in random groups of 3.
B. Each group has only 1 black whiteboard marker (shared).
C. It's okay to erase errors, but don't erase someone else's work without permission.
D. Once every member of the group can explain how they solved the previous task, your group gets the next task or extension.
An ice cream shop has ten flavors of ice cream. How many different two-scoop ice cream cones can you make?
Order matters (i.e. cv is different from vc)
Order does not matter (i.e. cv is the same as vc)
Great job yesterday with the Double-Scoop Ice Cream Cone Challenge! Everyone was able to come up with lots of different combinations of two-scoop ice cream cones.
Select four numbers from 1-9 at random. Using these four numbers and any operations, make values from 1 to 20.
Extend: Can you find expressions with answers from 21 to 30?
Rules are the foundation of a functional classroom where all students can be successful. We have rules so that everyone knows what to expect, can feel safe, and be safe. Our class (and school) rules are:
Be safe
Be responsible
Be respectful
Procedures are things you will often need to do when you are in a class. Procedures tell students how to do the simple, everyday things -- so that everyone can do the routine stuff and stay focused on learning the new stuff.
Let's take the next fifteen minutes to review and discuss our class procedures -- so everyone knows how to accomplish the routine tasks.
Welcome to Room 202. My name is Mr. Olsen. I am one of three teachers on the Sixth Grade Math Team. We work together closely to ensure that you are successful in this class and at FMS.
As a teacher, I love helping students learn new things -- especially things that they think are difficult. This is my 19th year of teaching and 16th year of teaching math.
I am married. My wife and I have four children.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy hanging with my family and building things. I love being outdoors!
Let's take the next ten minutes to learn more about each other.
1. What will we be learning?
2. What does my teacher expect of me?
3. What supplies do I need for this class?
4. What is my grade based on?
To answer these questions, I will go to my FMS Website and open the class' syllabus.
Google Classroom is one way to get information about our class. Students typically like Google Classroom is because you can access all your classes in one place.
Google Classroom has a to-do list. Assignments that are due -- from any class -- show up in the to-do list. If you want to remove them from your to-do-list, click Mark As Done. You can see all assignments (even the ones you've marked as done) by going to Google Classroom's Classwork Tab.
I use GC to post assignments and share links. I do not use Google Classroom to collect work.
My Teacher Website is another way to access information for our class. My Teacher Website is a great place to go if you are absent or want to review what we did in class. My Teacher Website is always up to date.
You can get to my Teacher Website by going to Clever or through the school website.
When using my Teacher Website, you may be asked to enter an access code. I will give it to you now, but if you forget the access code, it is posted on Google Classroom's Stream.
T3 Survey Aug 10
Due 8/10
Now that you know a little about me, I'd love to learn about you! Please open Google Classroom and click the link below to complete the survey.
Today, we need to practice walking to our evacuation location.
Here are the directions: without talking, walk in a single file line to the basketball courts (Court i, line 202)
Old Mr. MacDonald is a chicken and pig farmer. One day, he notices that his animals have a total of 22 legs.
How many chickens and pigs might Old Mr. MacDonald have?
It is true that everyone in our class is extremely smart. It is also true that, at some point during the year, everyone in our class will have a question. Here are some of the ways you can get help in this class:
1. Ask during class
2. Drop in before school Monday - Thursday
3. Send me an email
* Practice sending an email...
As we work together to master the math standards, we will use a math textbook. The textbook is a great resource for getting help.
Both the physical and online versions have examples. In addition, the online version contains tutoring videos, self-check quizzes, step-by-step solutions for selected problems, and a Multilingual eGlossary.
To get to the online textbook, go to Clever > Click McGraw Hill. From there, you can enter the page number or select a chapter and lesson.
